Babar Azam was Pakistan's captain in all formats till the ODI World Cup last year, but he stepped down from his post due to his team's abysmal performance in the World Cup held in India. The PCB made several changes to the Pakistan national team at that time and it was decided to hand over the Test captaincy to Shan Masood as well as Shaheen Afridi in white ball cricket.

Pakistan lost the Test series against Australia under Masood, while Shaheen Afridi lost the first T20I series 4–1 even as his PSL side Lahore Qalandars finished the tournament winning just one out of ten matches in the entire tournament.

Pakistan's current selection panel consists of Wahab Riaz, Asad Shafiq, Abdul Razzaq and Mohammad Yousuf. The PCB said the decision to re-appoint Babar as captain was based on the unanimous recommendation of the selectors. Currently, under the leadership of Babar Azam, Pakistan will play a 5-match T20I series against New Zealand at home. After that, they will participate in the T20 World Cup in June by playing a four-match away T20I series against England.
